The short answer

Short answer

The Autumn type suits warm, muted and earthy colours with a golden undertone: rust, terracotta, pumpkin orange, mustard gold, olive, forest green, warm teal, chocolate brown, camel and cream. Gold flatters more than silver. Avoid all cool and icy tones such as pure white, fuchsia or cool blue — they drain the depth from the warm complexion. In short: the Autumn type thrives on warmth over coolness and on rich earthiness over clarity.

The Autumn type is the warmest and earthiest of the four colour types — its palette looks like a forest in October. It is the warm counterpart to the cool Winter type: both can carry depth, but at opposite temperatures. This guide shows you which colours make you glow, how to find your subtype and how to translate the Autumn palette into a wearable wardrobe. It is a deep dive complementing the overview Which colour type am I?

What is the Autumn type?

The Autumn type is one of four colour types in the classic four-seasons colour analysis. It is defined by three properties: warm (golden undertone), muted (soft rather than clear) and medium to deep in brightness. This combination makes it the earthiest and richest of all types.

The four-seasons model is rooted in the colour theory of Johannes Itten at the Bauhaus and was popularised in the 1980s by Carole Jackson's "Color Me Beautiful" (background on the method: Color analysis). The core idea: clothing in your own colour temperature makes the face glow, while the opposite temperature makes it fall flat.

For the Autumn type the undertone is warm-golden. Cool, clear or icy colours fight against the face; warm, smoky, earthy tones work with it. Autumn's signature colours are those of the leaves: rust, pumpkin, olive and warm gold. Its appeal lies not in clarity but in rich, muted depth.

The characteristics: Are you an Autumn type?

An Autumn type is recognised by a warm, golden undertone combined with medium contrast. Unlike the cool Winter type, everything about Autumn looks softer and warmer — the overall impression is earthy and harmonious, never icy-clear.

  • Skin: warm, golden or peachy undertone — from pale ivory through gold-beige to warm olive. It usually tans well and to a golden hue.
  • Hair: warm and golden — from copper-red and golden brown through chestnut to warm dark brown, often with a reddish or golden sheen.
  • Eyes: warm and earthy — hazel, amber, warm brown, olive green or a warm green-gold.
  • Contrast: medium. Hair, skin and eyes sit close together in warm tones, without the harsh opposition of Winter.

"The most reliable Autumn marker is the gold-versus-silver test. If gold makes your skin glow and silver makes it look greyish and cool, you are almost always a warm type — and if your colours also appear muted and earthy, an Autumn."

Autumn type undertone comparison: on the left warm, earthy colours (rust, mustard gold, olive, terracotta, teal, chocolate brown) with ticks that flatter; on the right cool colours (ice blue, fuchsia, cool grey, black, cool pink, royal blue) crossed out, which make the warm complexion look sallow

The colour check: 4 quick tests

These four tests clarify, in daylight by a window, whether you are an Autumn type. Artificial light distorts the temperature — so always test by the window.

  1. The vein test: If the veins on your wrist look more greenish, that points to a warm undertone — so towards Autumn (or Spring). Bluish veins suggest a cool type.
  2. The jewellery test: Hold gold and silver up to your face. If gold flatters and silver looks cool and pale, you are warm.
  3. The white-versus-cream test: Place pure white and cream white against your face. If cream white looks more harmonious and pure white makes you look pale, you are a warm type.
  4. The clarity test: Hold a clear, strong colour (pure white, bright pink) next to a muted, earthy one (olive, rust). If the muted, earthy colour makes you glow more, you are Autumn rather than Spring.

Only when three of four tests point in the same direction is the result reliable. If it stays ambiguous, a professional colour analysis with fabric swatches will help.

The Autumn-type colour palette: your colours

The Autumn-type colour palette consists of warm, muted and earthy colours with a golden undertone. They are rich but never garish — a warm, muted veil always lies over them. That is the principle: warmth meets warmth, depth meets depth.

Autumn type colour palette: 15 warm, earthy colours (rust, terracotta, pumpkin orange, mustard gold, olive, forest green, warm teal, chocolate brown, camel, cream, bronze) as yes-colours; below them crossed-out cool colours (ice blue, fuchsia, cool grey, black, cool pink, royal blue) as no-colours
  • Warm leaf tones (the signature colours): rust, terracotta, pumpkin orange, warm brick red — the signature colours of Autumn.
  • Gold & yellow: mustard yellow, warm gold, ochre, curry — never a cool lemon yellow.
  • Green & teal: olive, moss, forest green, warm petrol/teal — earthy and muted.
  • Warm neutrals: chocolate brown, camel, caramel, bronze, warm beige and cream instead of pure white. These replace black and cool grey as your base.

For a long-lasting wardrobe you build on these warm neutrals and combine them tone-on-tone with leaf tones — the foundation of any well-considered capsule wardrobe.

Which colours to avoid

The wrong colours matter just as much. These tones work against the Autumn type because they are either too cool or too clear:

  • Cool tones: icy blue, cool pink, fuchsia, magenta and cool grey make the warm complexion look sallow and greyish.
  • Pure white and pure black: too hard and too cool. Instead of pure white wear cream, instead of black wear chocolate brown or deep olive (exception: the Deep Autumn can carry black).
  • Icy pastels: baby blue, cool lilac or minty white belong to Summer — on Autumn they look lifeless.
  • Very clear, garish colours: bright pink or pure cobalt blue overpower the muted, earthy radiance.

A common mistake is reaching for black out of habit: it is considered "serious", but it drains the depth from the warm Autumn face and emphasises shadows and tiredness. The most reliable substitute is chocolate brown or deep olive as a base colour — just as versatile and combinable as black, but at the right warm temperature. Making just this one change makes you look instantly fresher and healthier, without having to rebuild your whole wardrobe.

The 3 Autumn subtypes: Warm, Soft, Deep

"Autumn type" is not a monolith. In the extended 12-colour analysis, Autumn splits into three subtypes, depending on which of its three properties — warm, muted or deep — dominates. The image shows the three palettes side by side (from left to right: Warm, Soft, Deep).

The three Autumn-type subtypes in a palette comparison: on the left Warm Autumn (mustard gold, golden orange, copper, red-brown), in the middle Soft Autumn (sage green, salmon, taupe, muted green), on the right Deep Autumn (dark green, wine red, chocolate brown, deep teal)
Subtype Neighbouring season Character Best colours
Warm Autumn Spring type Warmest & most golden Mustard gold, golden orange, copper, red-brown
Soft Autumn Summer type Most muted, lowest contrast Sage green, salmon, taupe, muted olive
Deep Autumn Winter type Deepest, can also carry black Dark green, wine red, chocolate brown, deep teal

The classification is decided by the dominant property: if warmth is strongest, you are Warm Autumn. If muted softness dominates, Soft Autumn. If depth dominates, Deep Autumn. Most people recognise themselves at once in exactly one of the three columns.

Combining Autumn-type clothing

Since the Autumn type brings warm, earthy undertones, rich tone-on-tone combinations and natural materials are especially flattering. The three practical ground rules:

  1. Earthy on earthy: Combine two neighbouring leaf tones, such as rust with olive or camel with chocolate brown. This mirrors your own warm, muted colouring.
  2. Warm neutrals as a base: Build the wardrobe on camel, chocolate brown, olive and cream instead of black, grey and pure white.
  3. Natural materials: Suede, linen, coarse wool and corduroy underline the earthy character better than smooth, cool fabrics.

A concrete example: instead of a cool grey-and-black look — which makes Autumn look sallow — wear a cream blouse with camel trousers and add a rust or olive tone as an accent. Warm base plus warm accent is the most reliable Autumn formula; it looks grounded rather than severe and works in the office as well as at leisure.

Colour is only half the battle — the cuts that suit you depend on your body line, not on your colour season. More on that under Colour meets form.

Make-up & jewellery for the Autumn type

For make-up the rule is: warm and earthy. The Autumn type suits warm, muted tones on lips and cheeks — terracotta, warm coral red, brick, bronze and warm nude. Cool, bluish pink or berry tones, by contrast, make it look sickly.

  • Lips: terracotta, warm coral and brick red, warm nude, copper. No cool pink, no blue-red.
  • Cheeks: warm peach, bronze, soft terracotta.
  • Jewellery: gold, bronze, copper and brass flatter; silver looks too cool. Natural materials such as wood, horn and amber suit it too.

Autumn type vs. Spring & Summer type

The Autumn type gets confused in two directions: with the Spring type (both warm) and with the Summer type (both muted). The difference lies in two axes — temperature and clarity. This table separates the three cleanly:

Characteristic Autumn type Spring type Summer type
Temperature Warm Warm Cool
Clarity Muted, earthy Clear, fresh Muted, soft
Brightness Medium to deep Light Light to medium
Signature colour Rust & olive Clear peach & turquoise Muted blue

The rule of thumb: Autumn is warmth with depth and earthiness, Spring is warmth with clarity and freshness, Summer is coolness with softness. Anyone who thinks they are a Spring but looks too garish in clear colours and only settles in earthy tones is usually an Autumn.

Colour meets form: Autumn type and your Kibbe type

A point many colour guides leave out: your colour season and your body line are two entirely independent systems. Colour analysis (Autumn type) tells you which colours suit you. The Kibbe Body Type System tells you which cuts and lines suit you.

An Autumn type can be any of the 13 Kibbe types — a soft Romantic just as much as an angular Dramatic. An example: two women are both Autumn and wear the same warm olive — one as a softly draped wrap dress (Romantic), the other as a sharply cut trench coat (Dramatic). Same colour, opposite cut. Only the combination of a warm Autumn palette and the right cut produces the complete picture. You can find out which Kibbe type you are in the do-it-yourself Kibbe test.

Self-check: 5 questions

This self-check does not replace a full analysis, but it quickly filters whether the Autumn type is plausible for you. Answer honestly in daylight:

  1. Undertone: Do the veins on your wrist look more greenish than bluish?
  2. Metal: Does gold flatter you more than silver?
  3. White: Does cream white suit you better than hard pure white?
  4. Earthiness: Do warm, earthy tones like rust or olive make you glow more than clear, cool colours?
  5. Black: Does pure black at the collar make you look sallow and severe?

Five times yes strongly indicates the Autumn type. If the line to Spring stays unclear, clarity decides — or the overview Which colour type am I?

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Which colours suit the Autumn type best?

The Autumn type is suited best by warm, muted and earthy colours: rust, terracotta, pumpkin orange, mustard gold, olive, forest green, warm teal, chocolate brown, camel, caramel and cream. All these tones have a golden, warm undertone. The signature colours are those of autumn leaves — rust and olive.

Which colours should an Autumn type avoid?

An Autumn type should avoid all cool and icy tones — icy blue, cool pink, fuchsia, magenta and cool grey. Pure white and pure black are usually too hard and too cool too; instead of pure white, Autumn wears cream. Delicate, icy pastels make the warm complexion look lifeless.

Can an Autumn type wear black?

For most Autumn types pure black is too hard and too cool — it drains the depth from the warm complexion. The exception is the Deep Autumn, who brings enough depth to carry black. Everyone else is better off replacing black with chocolate brown, deep olive or midnight teal.

How do I tell whether I am an Autumn or a Spring type?

Both types are warm — the difference lies in clarity and brightness. The Spring type is clear, fresh and light; luminous, clear warm tones suit it. The Autumn type is muted, earthy and medium to deep; rich, muted tones suit it. A practical test: if a clear, light colour makes you glow, you are Spring; if you only look coherent in earthy, muted tones, you are Autumn.

What is the difference between an Autumn and a Summer type?

Both types are muted, but they differ in temperature. The Autumn type is warm with a golden undertone; the Summer type is cool with a bluish undertone. Autumn's signature colours are rust and olive, Summer's signature colours are muted blue and mauve. The jewellery test decides quickly: gold for Autumn, silver for Summer.

What are the three Autumn subtypes?

The Autumn type splits into Warm Autumn, Soft Autumn and Deep Autumn. The Warm Autumn borders on Spring and wears the most golden, warmest tones. The Soft Autumn borders on Summer and is the most muted, with the lowest contrast. The Deep Autumn borders on Winter, wears the deepest tones and is the only Autumn that can also carry black.

Which jewellery suits the Autumn type?

Gold suits the warm Autumn type best, as do bronze, copper and brass. Silver looks too cool on it and drains the warmth from the face. Natural materials such as wood, horn, leather and amber underline the earthy character of the type especially beautifully.

Is the Autumn type rare?

In Central Europe the Autumn type is considered somewhat rarer than the Summer type, because warm, golden undertones are less common here than cool ones. It is more common in regions with a naturally warmer complexion and reddish or golden hair. There are, however, no reliable representative statistics on this — the figure is based on the practical experience of colour consultants.

Is the Autumn type connected to my body type?

No. The colour season and the body line are two independent systems. The Autumn type determines your colours, the Kibbe Body Type System your cuts and lines. An Autumn type can be any of the 13 Kibbe types — only the combination of a warm palette and the right cut produces the complete style picture.

Does grey suit the Autumn type?

Pure, cool grey usually looks dull and sallow on the warm Autumn type. What works is a warm greige or taupe with a brown cast — that is, a grey with warmth mixed in. As a rule of thumb: the warmer and earthier the grey, the better it suits the Autumn palette; clear silver-grey is best left to Winter.
